And it only makes sense. For all the warm and fuzzy talk about "engagement" and "connection", when it comes down to it, consumers want to save money. And they'll like your page in order to do so.
Of course, warm and fuzzy is good; after all, it helps foster top-of-mind brand awareness with consumers. So, the question is not "How many 'Likes' do I have?"; it's "What will you do with the 'Likes' once you receive them?"
Keeping your fans interested in your brand after they 'Liked' you just to get a deal is where the real social media magic comes in.
